Engineering Assistent to Ex-Gov Edison Dies at 74
Sea Girt- Joseph Berge of 302 Stockton River Blvd., a retired industrial engineer, died Saturday of a long illness in Long Branch nursing home. He was 74.
Mr Berge came to New York in 1924 and opened a consulting engineering buisnesswhich he erated until 1932 when he joined the Jaeger Watch Co. He retired as vice president of the watch company 1947. After his retirement, he became a staff assistant to former Gov. Charles Edison and worked on a consulting basis until about 1956 when he retired. He worked with Mr Edisonin the formation of new manufacturing enterprises.
Born in Chicago, Mr Berge was graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology. He taught from four years at Lane Technical High School in Chicago until1913 when he joined Stewart-Warner Corp., Chicago as chief engineer. He left Stewart-Warnerin 1918and during World War I he was a project engineer with the General Motors Research Division Inc. at Flint , Mich. and Dayton Ohio. He later became chief engineer for AC spark plug division of General Motors at Flint.
Mr Berge was the author of many engineeringpapers in the automotive fields, and also had been issued at number of patents in connection with his work in many subjects.
Mr Berge moved to Montclair whenhe came East 1924, and later lived in East Orange and Maplewood before moving here 11 years ago. He was an early member of the society of Automotive Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and othe proffesional groups. He also had been working with Thomas A. Edison and was member of Edison Pioneers.
